Haiti is a land of mountains filled with warm, openhearted people who hold close to their African roots. The spirit world of Vodou keeps Haitians deeply rooted to the animistic spirit world of West Africa. Haitians are a vibrant and creative people. Art and ritual are a vital part of every day life in Haiti.

For complex political and economic reasons, these artistic and spiritual people are often forced to live in difficult and demanding poverty. Haiti is a deeply wounded Paradise that captures the hearts of nearly all who visit her.

In June 2003, Tom, Janet and their daughter Mira, traveled to Haiti to perform in orphanages there. They intended to do twenty-one performances throughout the country. They were able to do only eleven performances because they seriously underestimated the difficulties of traveling around Haiti. To get to one show only 40 miles away, they traveled in the back of a pick up truck with 22 other people for five hours. They hope to return again to discover more of Haiti and perform for her warm and wonderful people.
