
The Balkans lie at the heart of the great historic civilizations. The great religious and political powers of European history have struggled and blossomed there. The empires of Rome, Charlemagne, the Ottomans and the Austro-Hungarians and the faiths of Western and Eastern Christianity, Judaism and Islam have all enacted their histories on the Balkan stage.
The war that engulfed this part of the world in 1992 brought tremendous
destruction and suffering to her people and the great country of Yugoslavia
was destroyed. The war created a massive refugee crisis and at one point hundreds
of thousands of people were displaced from their homes.
In November of 2003, Tom and Janet traveled to the Balkans and performed for
three thousand refugee and orphan children. The United Nations High Commission
for Refugees provided Tom and Janet with accommodations and transportation,
enabling them to perform in many refugee camps and resettlement centers, orphanages
and hospitals.
